Dame Patience Jonathan, former First Lady of Nigeria, has unequivocally ruled out any intention of running for president in 2027.

Speaking at the Women Icon Leader of the Year award ceremony in Abuja on May 10, 2025, she made it clear that she would not be seeking a return to Aso Rock, leaving political observers to wonder what her true role will be in the upcoming elections.

Though Jonathan shut down speculation about a presidential bid, her speech hinted at an influential involvement in the 2027 political scene.

While she refrained from revealing any specific plans, her remarks suggested that she intends to play a critical part in the country’s future politics—though whether as a supporter, advisor, or key strategist remains to be seen.

During her address, Jonathan also reflected on her close ties with influential figures in Nigerian politics, especially her relationship be with the Tinubu family.

She expressed deep gratitude for the support she received from key political allies, underscoring her belief in the value of loyalty and political solidarity. Her statement reinforced that, although she will not be a candidate herself, her commitment to certain political players will remain strong.

Jonathan’s comments about the principle of “one president at a time” further suggest that she sees herself not as a contender, but as a figure who will help shape the decisions of the next government.

Her influence, while not on the ballot, could still play a pivotal role in determining who takes the reins in 2027.

As the election draws near, Jonathan’s future in Nigerian politics remains a mystery. While she’s ruled out the presidency, the door remains wide open for her to exert considerable influence behind the scenes, whether through supporting a candidate, advising key players, or guiding political strategy.

Whatever her role turns out to be, it’s clear that Patience Jonathan’s presence in Nigeria’s political landscape is far from over.
