Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Ltd. has been awarded the Outstanding Oil and Gas Company Award at the prestigious 2025 National Sustainability Achievements Awards, held on 22 May at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos.
Organized by ESG Impact Consulting Ltd., this year’s summit was themed “Nigeria’s Green Transition Efforts & Climate Change Revolution,” and brought together leaders championing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices across Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
Sterling Oil stood out among Nigeria’s top corporations for its exceptional strides in sustainable energy innovation, climate resilience, and community-focused development. The award recognizes the company’s leadership in integrating green practices into core operations while demonstrating scalable solutions for the oil and gas industry.
Key highlights of Sterling Oil’s ESG performance include:
Conversion of 90%+ of its vehicle fleet to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), reducing emissions across operational sites.
Upgrade of marine barges to double-hull vessels for enhanced environmental protection.
Aggressive flare gas recovery programme to convert waste gas into usable energy.
On-site waste recycling infrastructure capable of processing 100 kg/hour.
Afforestation campaign targeting 10,000 new trees annually, with over 25,000 seedlings nurtured and a tree survival rate of 60–80%.

The awards ceremony also honoured leading ESG performers including Dangote Sugar, BUA Foods, Ikeja Hotels Plc, Africa Prudential Plc, GREE, and Dabur Herbal Clove Gel Toothpaste. Sterling Oil’s accolade was widely seen as a defining moment for the energy sector, reinforcing the role of oil and gas companies in driving Nigeria’s green economy ambitions.
