A 10-year-old boy in Awka, Anambra State, accidentally shot and killed his father, a serving police inspector, with a service rifle.
The officer, identified as Inspector Amaechi Okolie, was reportedly at home when his son picked up the AK-47 rifle assigned to him.
Unaware that the rifle was loaded, the boy pulled the trigger. The shot struck his father in the back, killing him.
A second shot injured the inspector’s other son, who was hit in the hand but survived.
The Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025.
Inspector Okolie was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. His injured son remains in hospital and is said to be recovering.
Police recovered the weapon from the scene. The body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue.
The police command expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured child a full recovery.
