Diogo Jota, the talented forward for Liverpool FC and the Portugal national team, tragically passed away at the age of 28. His sudden death has left the football community in shock, occurring just days after what appeared to be the height of his personal and professional achievements.
The incident, confirmed by the Spanish sports outlet MARCA, revealed that Jota lost his life at the scene of a car accident.
Born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal, Jota’s rise in the world of football was marked by remarkable skill and determination. Known for his versatility in attack, he earned respect across Europe for his performances as a forward, winger, and creative player. Jota began his career in Portugal, but it was with Wolverhampton Wanderers and then Liverpool that he earned international recognition.
Joining Liverpool on September 19, 2020, from Wolves, Jota quickly became a key figure in the Reds’ offensive setup. His market value peaked at €60 million in December 2021, and he extended his contract with the club in August 2022, which was set to run until 2027.
By May 2025, Jota had accumulated 398 club appearances, scoring 136 goals and providing 66 assists. His contributions in the Premier League (63 goals, 24 assists in 190 matches) were complemented by impressive performances in European competitions like the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.
In addition to his football achievements, Jota recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 28, 2025.
His passing has left fans, teammates, and the wider football world mourning the loss of a brilliant talent taken far too soon.
