ADC: Tinubu Will Be Removed via Ballot, Not Bullets – Responds to Presidency Over Overthrow Claims in Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asserted that President Bola Tinubu will be removed through democratic elections, not through violence, in response to comments from the Presidency about an alleged plot to overthrow the government in Nigeria.

The party rejected claims that it or its coalition partners are seeking to undermine democracy in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Wednesday, ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused President Tinubu of setting the stage for a crackdown on opposition figures, following remarks made by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. Onanuga had suggested that a coalition of opposition groups was conspiring to overthrow the government before the 2027 elections.

Abdullahi called Onanuga’s accusations reckless and baseless, stating that such statements reflect an attempt by the current administration to intimidate and silence opposition voices. He emphasized that the ADC is committed to removing Tinubu through legitimate democratic means, not by force.

The ADC’s statement clarified: “We condemn the reckless tweet by President Tinubu’s aide, Onanuga, which falsely claims that the opposition is planning to overthrow the government before 2027. This narrative risks justifying a clampdown on opposition leaders.”

“We are not seeking to endanger democracy. Our focus is on rescuing Nigeria from the failures of this government. We are not soldiers; we are politicians. We do not wield bullets; we rely on ballots. When the time comes, we will offer our solutions and alternative vision to the Nigerian people, who will ultimately decide their future.”
