Trump to Enforce Over 10% Uniform Tariffs on African, Caribbean Nations Starting August

President Donald Trump has announced plans to implement import tariffs exceeding 10 percent on a broad group of “smaller nations,” including many countries across Africa and the Caribbean. The new trade policy is set to take effect from August 1 and will cover more than 100 countries.

Speaking to reporters, Trump indicated the tariffs would likely be a single flat rate “a little over 10%” applied uniformly to these nations. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the focus on African and Caribbean countries, noting their relatively modest trade volume with the U.S. and minimal impact on overall trade balance goals.

In addition to these tariffs, Trump revealed a deal with Indonesia that will impose a 19 percent tariff on Indonesian imports, down from an initial threat of 32 percent. The agreement includes Indonesia’s commitment to purchase $15 billion in U.S. energy products, $4.5 billion in agricultural goods, and 50 Boeing jets.

Trump also signaled upcoming tariffs on pharmaceutical products and computer chips, with a phased approach planned to support domestic manufacturing before raising rates.

This move follows an earlier round of historically high import tariffs announced in April, which caused market fluctuations. A 90-day negotiation period that ended on July 9 failed to resolve the disputes.

Letters outlining the new tariff rates have already been sent to around two dozen countries and the European Union, setting the stage for the tariffs to come into force next month
