Egypt Raises Concerns Over Trump’s Gaza Ceasefire Proposal
Egypt has expressed reservations about US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza ceasefire plan, describing it as riddled with “many loopholes.”
Speaking at the French Institute of International Relations in Paris, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Cairo is in close coordination with Qatar and Türkiye in efforts to persuade Hamas to engage with the proposal.
“There are many loopholes in Trump’s plan that need to be addressed,” Abdelatty told state-run Al-Qahera News. He noted that discussions were ongoing with Hamas to gauge its response.
The minister stressed that key questions remain unresolved, particularly concerning governance and security arrangements during the transition period in Gaza. “We are very cautious and are talking to Hamas to assess their reaction to this plan,” he added.
The plan, unveiled by the White House on September 29, calls for an immediate ceasefire, followed by reconstruction efforts and the reorganisation of Gaza’s political and security structures.
It envisions the territory becoming a weapons-free zone under transitional governance, overseen by an international monitoring body led by Trump.
It also includes the release of Israeli captives held by Hamas within 72 hours of approval, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
The proposal outlines three core elements: ending hostilities, disarming Palestinian resistance groups, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
