South African President Cyril Ramaphosa gave his country’s Olympic swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker a surprise phone call after winning her gold medal.
The 24-year-old swimmer broke the world record after wining the women’s 200 meters breaststroke with a time of 2:18.95 on Friday, last week.
Ramaphosa congratulated the Schoenmaker and praised her coach for the job well done:
“You have lifted the country, we are in a good mood,” said Mr Ramaphosa.
“You smashed it. A world record is fantastic!”
Schoenmaker looks forward to returning home as she heads back to her second degree studies.
“This will give you wings to make that second degree,” the president added.
