Nigerian Troops Storm Turji Camps, Kill Scores of Bandits in Northwest Offensive

Nigerian troops have recorded fresh gains against armed groups in the North-West, killing several bandits during coordinated operations targeting camps linked to notorious kingpin Bello Turji.

The offensive, carried out across parts of Zamfara State and Sokoto State, focused on hideouts in Fakai community within Shinkafi and Isa local government areas.

Military sources said the mission formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle bandit networks operating in the region.

The operation, led by troops of the 8 Division Strike Force, began in the early hours of March 20, with forces advancing deep into forested terrain believed to house Turji’s camps.

However, movement was briefly slowed after two combat support vehicles developed mechanical faults near Maberaya village in Sokoto State.

Despite the setback, troops came under ambush from heavily armed fighters who took advantage of elevated positions and thick vegetation.

The soldiers responded with sustained firepower, engaging the attackers and inflicting significant casualties.

During the encounter, three soldiers and one operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) were injured and later evacuated for medical treatment.

Authorities also dismissed circulating claims that a large number of bandits died in a boat accident in Sabon Gida, describing the report as false.

Officials from the National Inland Waterways Authority confirmed that the river area in question is not currently navigable.

The latest operation comes amid heightened security concerns across parts of the country.
In Kwara State, local security groups have raised alarm over what they describe as inadequate response to rising threats, following a recent attack on a church in Ifelodun Local Government Area where worshippers were abducted.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving troop welfare, stressing that morale and well-being remain central to ongoing military operations.

Speaking during engagements with personnel, he highlighted the importance of unity and sustained collaboration among security agencies in tackling insecurity nationwide.

He also acknowledged the sacrifices of personnel involved in frontline operations and commended troops across various divisions for their continued efforts to restore peace.
