13 Dead, Hundreds Injured: US Steps Up Military Presence in Middle East

The United States is set to deploy an additional 1,000 troops to the Middle East as the conflict involving Iran intensifies, with casualties continuing to rise on both sides.

Reports from Sky News and NBC News indicate that the deployment will include soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, a rapid-response force known for its ability to mobilise quickly for high-risk operations. Sources familiar with the plan told the Associated Press that the troops are expected to depart in the coming days following approval from US President Donald Trump.

The move follows last week’s announcement that thousands of US Marines aboard naval vessels were being positioned closer to the region, signalling a growing American military presence.

Attention has increasingly turned to Kharg Island, a strategic oil export hub in Iran. Recent US airstrikes reportedly targeted defensive systems on the island, though officials said vital oil facilities were not damaged. Iran has since warned it could retaliate by disrupting shipping routes in the Gulf if it detects any attempt at a ground invasion.

On the US side, the human toll is becoming more evident. Officials from US Central Command told CNN that about 290 American service members have been injured in the ongoing conflict. While most have returned to duty, at least 10 remain in serious condition. Thirteen US troops have also been confirmed dead.

Casualties reported within Iran are far higher. As of March 21, Iranian state media said more than 1,500 people had been killed. In neighbouring Lebanon, health authorities have reported over 1,000 deaths linked to the widening conflict.

The latest troop movement highlights growing concerns over a prolonged confrontation, with fears that further escalation could destabilise the wider Middle East region.
