Nigeria Faces Looming Healthcare Disruption as Doctors Set for Indefinite Strike
Public healthcare services across Nigeria are on the brink of major disruption as the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike scheduled to begin at midnight on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
The move follows a fresh disagreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria over the suspension of the revised Professional Allowance Table—an agreement that had been reached after the doctors’ 2025 industrial action.
Speaking on the development, NARD President, Shuaibu Ibrahim, said the decision by the government to withdraw the allowance structure was deeply concerning and unacceptable to members of the association.
He explained that the resolution to embark on the strike was reached during a virtual emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council over the weekend, after extensive deliberations on the issue.
With the planned industrial action set to take effect nationwide, public hospitals are likely to experience significant service interruptions, raising fears among patients and stakeholders about access to critical healthcare services in the coming days.
