FIFA Boss Infantino Insists Iran Will Play at 2026 World Cup Despite War Fears and Political Tension
President of world football governing body Gianni Infantino has reaffirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as concerns grow over rising geopolitical tensions involving the country.
Speaking at CNBC’s Invest in America Forum, the FIFA president maintained that Iran’s qualification stands and should not be affected by political or military developments.
He stressed that football must remain focused on sporting merit, noting that the Iranian team has already qualified and is eager to participate on the global stage.
Infantino stated clearly that Iran’s place at the tournament is certain, adding that while a peaceful global environment would be ideal, it does not change their qualification status.
He emphasized that the players want to compete and should be allowed to do so.
His remarks come amid ongoing international tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which have raised broader questions about global security and how it may affect international sporting events.
The FIFA president also revealed that he recently met members of the Iranian national team in Antalya, Turkey, where he described them as a motivated and competitive side preparing seriously for the tournament.
He further stressed the importance of separating football from political disputes, arguing that the sport should serve as a bridge between nations.
However, he acknowledged that in reality, keeping sports completely independent from global politics is often difficult.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature Iran in the group stage, with matches scheduled in Inglewood, California, and Seattle if fixtures remain unchanged.
