Turkey Urges Muslim Nations to Shape Their Own Global Narrative
Burhanettin Duran, head of Directorate of Communications of the Republic of Türkiye, has called on Muslim-majority nations to work together in presenting their own stories to the world, warning that global power structures are becoming increasingly unstable.
Speaking at the 2026 Muslim Impact Summit in Istanbul, Duran said today’s challenges extend far beyond traditional warfare, noting that information, perception, and public opinion have become powerful battlegrounds in modern conflicts.
He argued that the international system is showing signs of deep dysfunction, with institutions established to preserve peace struggling to remain effective.
According to him, some of the very nations that helped build the current global order are now contributing to its instability.
Duran also highlighted the dangers posed by misinformation, fake videos, and propaganda on social media, stressing the need for a stronger commitment to factual, verified journalism.
He said Muslim countries must invest in credible media, education, and institutions capable of countering false narratives.
Referencing the works of Edward Said, Duran noted that Western interpretations have historically shaped global perceptions of Islam.
He urged Muslim societies to move beyond merely reacting to external narratives and instead take an active role in shaping the emerging world order.
He further emphasized that if Muslim communities fail to tell their own stories, others will continue to define their identity and place on the global stage.
Duran expressed optimism that stronger collaboration among governments, civil society, journalists, academics, and artists would foster greater unity across the Muslim world and contribute positively to global discourse.
