MALAWIANS E-PROTEST BBC’s “POOR COUNTRY” INSINUATIONS

Majority Malawian social media users have staged an online protest demanding BBC World Service to apologise to Malawi for their Tuesday Focus on Africa program following the Tuesday Focus on Africa program which described Malawi as a poor, criticizing the country’s President Lazarus Chakwera, who pledged to reward the national team members with for their performance at AFCON.

The program insinuated that, Malawi as a poor country its citizens do not have to reward each other with gifts.

This was in reaction to president Lazarus Chakwera’s pledge that when Malawi qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, he will reward the players with 1 million Kwacha each.

Reacting to the program, Malawian Government Spokesperson, Gospel Kazako classified the remarks by the BBC focus on Africa host as imperialist and colonial.

In this special protest, Malawians are flooding every BBC Service and BBC Africa post with demands for the UK broadcaster to issue a public apology.

Social media users notably from Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe including South Africa, have joined the protest, calling on the BBC to apologize.

Meanwhile, Malawi’s Flames made history after qualifying to the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time ever.

The Flames will face Morocco on Tuesday 25 January, 2022.
