Zambia Rebukes Departing U.S. Envoy Over Disrespectful Exit Remarks
Tensions have surfaced between Zambia and the United States following sharp criticism from Michael Gonzales, whose parting comments have drawn an official backlash from Lusaka.
The controversy began during a farewell event in the capital, Lusaka, where Gonzales reportedly voiced concerns about corruption and the management of aid, particularly within the health sector.
While such remarks might typically be handled through diplomatic channels, Zambian officials say the manner and setting of the comments crossed a line.
Responding on Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe described the ambassador’s statements as inappropriate and inconsistent with diplomatic norms.
He stressed that raising sensitive issues outside formal processes undermines mutual respect between nations.
According to Haimbe, the absence of an official complaint or structured engagement signaled disregard for Zambia’s sovereignty and established diplomatic practice.
He urged both citizens and international partners to dismiss the envoy’s remarks, framing them as unrepresentative of the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
At the heart of the dispute is the nature of Zambia–U.S. relations. Haimbe rejected any suggestion that the partnership is defined by aid dependence, arguing instead that it is rooted in shared strategic interests and mutual benefit.
He characterized attempts to frame the relationship otherwise as dismissive of the historical ties and aspirations that underpin cooperation between the nations.
Despite the diplomatic friction, the Zambian government maintained that it remains committed to strengthening governance, tackling corruption, and advancing sustainable development.
Officials reiterated their openness to continued collaboration with global partners, provided engagements are grounded in respect, international law, and proper diplomatic conduct.
The episode underscores how even routine diplomatic transitions can expose deeper sensitivities, especially when public remarks touch on governance, sovereignty, and the balance of power in international partnerships.
