Ronaldo Bows Out of World Cup, Says Euro Title Equals Football’s Biggest Prize
Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that winning the UEFA Euro 2016 with Portugal remains just as significant to him as lifting the FIFA World Cup, following his country’s exit from the 2026 tournament.

Portugal’s World Cup journey came to an end on Monday after a 1-0 loss to Spain in the Round of 16, with substitute Mikel Merino netting a late winner to seal the victory.
Reacting after the match, Ronaldo reflected on his international career, saying he remains fulfilled by what he achieved in Portugal’s colours despite never winning football’s biggest prize.
According to the Portuguese captain, the 2016 European Championship triumph holds the same place in his heart as a World Cup trophy.
The 41-year-old also confirmed that the match against Spain marked the final World Cup appearance of his illustrious career, having featured in six editions of the competition.
Ronaldo said he leaves the tournament with a clear conscience, maintaining that he gave everything possible for his country and has no reason to dwell on the disappointment of the defeat.

He noted that helping Portugal secure three major international trophies is a legacy he is proud of, especially considering the nation’s previous lack of success on the global stage.
While expressing sadness over the elimination, Ronaldo praised Spain for their quality and backed them to go deep into the tournament.
The veteran forward bows out of the World Cup with 27 appearances and 11 goals. His best finish came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals, while his 2026 campaign produced three goals, including a brace against Uzbekistan and a penalty against Croatia.

Though the World Cup title ultimately escaped him, Ronaldo’s international career is highlighted by Portugal’s historic UEFA Euro 2016 victory and two UEFA Nations League crowns.
