Osun Election: Davido Accuses Tinubu of ‘Killing Democracy’ Amid Security Tension
Afrobeats star Davido has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining democracy as tension mounted around the Osun State governorship election on Saturday.
The singer raised the alarm on his verified X account, claiming that the police and military were being withdrawn from the state because his side was winning the election.
“Because we are winning. They want to withdraw the police and military! MR PRESIDENT TINUBU! UR KILLING DEMOCRACY,” Davido wrote.
Davido, whose uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking another term, had been closely following the election and repeatedly urged voters to remain at their polling units until results were uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, IReV.
He also drew attention to other incidents reported during the election, including the alleged arrest of an opposition party chairman.
Security agencies had mounted a major operation across Osun, with thousands of police officers deployed alongside other security personnel.
Mobile force units, helicopters and drones were also part of the security arrangements, while the military helped secure strategic locations and enforce movement restrictions.
Officials said the deployment was designed to protect voters, electoral personnel and election materials and prevent violence during the exercise.
Davido’s accusation quickly triggered mixed reactions online. While some users backed his call for a credible election, others questioned whether his outspoken position was largely influenced by his family connection to Adeleke.
The development comes as attention remains fixed on the counting and collation of results, with the outcome of the closely watched election still dominating discussions across the state.
