After nine days in police custody, journalist Daniel Ojukwu, affiliated with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been released.
Ojukwu was detained by police since May 1, following his alleged abduction by officers in Lagos. His whereabouts remained unknown to his family and FIJ management until 48 hours after his disappearance. Initially held at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja, he was later moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
Despite stringent bail conditions imposed by the police, pressure from civil society organizations led to a softening of their stance, ultimately resulting in Ojukwu’s release on Friday. FIJ’s lawyer, Abimbola Ojenike, condemned Ojukwu’s detention as a severe violation of human rights and an abuse of police powers against journalists.
