ACCRA, May 14 – Legendary American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder has been granted Ghanaian citizenship in a ceremony held at Jubilee House in Accra.
President Nana Akufo-Addo honored Wonder for his outstanding contributions to music, highlighting that his newfound ties with Ghana would further strengthen the connection between Africa and its diaspora.
In recent years, Ghana has intensified its efforts to attract more diasporan Africans, seeking to bolster cultural and economic links. Wonder had previously announced his intention to move to Ghana indefinitely during a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, citing a desire to protect his grandchildren from racial injustice in the United States.
“The presence of Stevie Wonder in Ghana is a significant boost to our cultural landscape,” President Akufo-Addo said. “His decision to establish deeper roots here underscores the importance of our ongoing efforts to reconnect with the African diaspora.”
Wonder’s move and his new citizenship are seen as part of a broader trend of prominent African Americans seeking to reconnect with their ancestral heritage.
