After Trump’s Threat, EU Makes Bold Declaration on Nigeria
The European Union has reaffirmed its solidarity with Nigeria, declaring strong support for the country’s sovereignty in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat of military intervention over alleged attacks on Christians.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, stressing that the bloc’s position is guided by its enduring partnership with Nigeria and not by external influence.
“Our stance is one of solidarity with Nigeria—solidarity with victims of violence, with the authorities working to protect citizens, and with the people who desire peaceful coexistence beyond ethnic and religious divides,” Mignot said.
He reaffirmed that the EU and its member states would continue to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and constitutional commitment to religious neutrality.
The envoy noted that the EU remains committed to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria in peace, security, and defence, adding that several ongoing initiatives aim to promote peaceful coexistence and support programs on deradicalisation and reintegration of ex-fighters in the North-East.
Acknowledging the challenges Nigeria faces in human rights and religious freedom, Mignot maintained that the country’s constitution provides a solid foundation for protecting fundamental freedoms.
“The situation is not perfect, as in any country, but there is a clear legal framework for human rights. It is the responsibility of the authorities and society to sustain this environment of peace,” he added.
He emphasized that EU support remains impartial, covering all victims of violence irrespective of religion or background.
Mignot also disclosed that a new dialogue on peace, security, and defence between Nigeria and the EU is expected soon, reiterating that Nigeria’s future “rests firmly in the hands of Nigerians.”
