Argentina Humble Nigeria 4–0, Flying Eagles Crash Out of FIFA U-20 World Cup
Six-time world champions Argentina overpowered the Flying Eagles of Nigeria 4–0 on Wednesday night, ending Nigeria’s hopes of advancing at the 24th FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The Round of 16 encounter, held at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, saw Argentina dominate from start to finish, sealing their revenge for the 2–0 defeat Nigeria inflicted on them during the 2023 edition hosted in Buenos Aires.
Argentina wasted no time asserting their authority as Alejo Sarco fired in the opener in the second minute, catching Nigeria’s defence off guard.
By the 23rd minute, Maher Carrizo doubled the lead with a beautifully struck free kick following a foul on the edge of the box by Nasiru Salihu.
Nigeria’s attempts to fight back were frustrated when appeals for a penalty were dismissed after Ramirez appeared to foul Salihu inside the area.
The Flying Eagles showed some spark through Oseer Achihi, who constantly troubled the Argentine defence with his pace and crosses. Just before halftime, Daniel Daga nearly reduced the deficit, but goalkeeper Santino Barbi produced a crucial save to keep Argentina comfortably ahead.
The second half saw the South Americans tighten their grip on the game. Carrizo struck again in the 53rd minute, while substitute Matheus Silvetti completed the rout in the 66th minute with a clinical finish past Ebenezer Harcourt.
With that, Nigeria’s campaign came to a disappointing end — their dream of adding a first-ever U-20 world title cut short once again.
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles came into the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup with high hopes, buoyed by a strong qualifying campaign and their long history of near-success at youth level. The team, coached by Ladan Bosso, showed flashes of promise in the group stages but lacked cutting edge in attack and composure in defence.
The match carried emotional weight as Argentina had unfinished business with Nigeria. Their 2023 defeat on home soil had been a painful blow to the South American powerhouse — one they were determined to erase in Chile.
Argentina’s clinical finishing and tactical discipline ultimately exposed Nigeria’s weaknesses, reigniting debate about the state of youth football development in the country.
Football observers have since called for renewed investment in grassroots structures, better international exposure for young players, and long-term planning to bridge the widening gap between African and South American teams at global tournaments.
Despite the heavy loss, Nigeria’s participation once again showcased the continent’s talent pipeline — a reminder that while the Flying Eagles fell short in Chile, the dream of world youth glory remains alive for the next generation.
