Boat Disaster Off Djibouti Coast Leaves Several Dead, Many Missing
A deadly boat accident off the coast of Djibouti has left several migrants feared dead, with many others still unaccounted for, according to the International Organization for Migration.
The vessel went down late on March 24 near the northern town of Obock while carrying a large number of passengers. Rescue teams have been deployed to search the waters, but concerns are growing over the fate of those still missing.
The migrants were travelling along the well-known “Eastern Route,” a path frequently used by people from the Horn of Africa seeking better opportunities in Gulf countries. Many are believed to have begun their journey from Ethiopia, passing through Djibouti in hopes of crossing into Yemen.
This route remains one of the most dangerous migration paths, often involving overcrowded boats and risky sea crossings. Incidents like this continue to highlight the growing humanitarian concerns surrounding irregular migration in the region.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities race against time to locate survivors.
