At least seven people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Kopl village in Chibok, Borno State, northeast Nigeria, Vanguard Newspaper reports.
The attack took place around 6:00 p.m. on Monday as villagers gathered for the final prayer session of a late community member.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen arrived heavily armed and began shooting indiscriminately at the mourners.
Chairman of Chibok Local Government, Hon. Modu Mustapha, confirmed the attack and said that many of the wounded have been taken to Mubi General Hospital in nearby Adamawa State.
He added that search-and-rescue efforts were still ongoing and warned that the death toll could increase, especially as preparations were underway for a mass burial.
The assault in Chibok came just hours after another deadly incident in Borno, where an improvised explosive device planted by insurgents killed dozens of travelers along the Gamboru Ngala–Kala Balge road.
Speaking on the rising wave of attacks, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, described the situation as deeply troubling.
He disclosed that over ten local vigilantes were also killed in a separate ambush between Hawul and Garkida towns.
“In the past month alone, we’ve seen more than a hundred people killed across several communities including Sabon Gari, Pulka, Kirawa, Damboa, Askira Uba, and now Chibok,” Ndume stated, calling for urgent security reinforcement.
The increasing frequency and scale of these attacks have heightened concerns among residents, as security forces continue operations to restore peace in the region.
