The Republic of Botswana’s President, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, has landed at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe this afternoon to begin a three-day state visit that signals deepening ties between Gaborone and Lilongwe.
President Boko, making his first official state visit to Malawi since taking office, will be the guest of honour at Malawi’s 61st Independence Day celebrations this Sunday, 6 July, at Bingu National Stadium. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of Malawians for a day of national pride and reflection.
According to Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Boko will also hold bilateral talks with President Lazarus Chakwera during his visit. Officials say discussions will focus on trade, security cooperation, and regional economic integration within SADC, as both nations look to expand strategic partnerships in energy, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Botswana and Malawi have historically shared cordial relations, but President Boko’s visit comes at a time when Southern Africa is working to navigate common challenges, from food security and cross-border trade facilitation to climate resilience.
Upon arrival, the Botswana leader was received by Malawi’s Vice President Dr Michael Usi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo, Minister of Trade Vitumbiko Mumba, and other senior government officials. The official welcome ceremony included military honours and cultural performances symbolising Malawi’s warm hospitality.
This visit also reinforces Malawi’s ongoing diplomatic engagements ahead of the SADC Summit set for later this year, where leaders are expected to align regional priorities under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
