At the EcoMove Lagos 2025 Conference, Prof. Iyiola Oni, Director of the Multi-Modal Transport Centre, University of Lagos, emphasized that transitioning to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric buses is crucial to combating environmental and health issues caused by traditional transport systems.
“Cleaner transport is not optional, it is necessary for a healthier, more resilient Lagos,” Oni asserted.
He highlighted that Lagos has long faced severe traffic congestion, air pollution, and reliance on outdated vehicles like diesel-powered ‘Danfo’ minibuses.
He praised government reforms including BRT systems, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit, and the introduction of CNG-powered buses, calling them vital steps toward social inclusion and environmental justice.
“These interventions… are about connecting communities, fostering social inclusion and ensuring that people… have safe, affordable and clean transport options,” he said.
Despite notable progress under the Lagos State Transportation Master Plan, Oni pointed to ongoing issues such as policy gaps, poor maintenance culture, and limited funding.
He urged for increased investment, public awareness, and stronger institutional support.
Commissioner Kehinde Ajobiewe of Ekiti State also endorsed the initiative, noting that:
“A polluted environment is a risk for everyone… Ekiti is planning to key into having an eco-friendly environment through the introduction of electric vehicles and CNG buses.”
Lagos transportation aide Toyin Aremu echoed the call for sustainable transport:
“Our campaign is about promoting a healthy nation… People should take away their phobia and make use of the waterways to reduce the crack on the roads.”
He further encouraged shared car use and greater public transport patronage to ease traffic and improve urban efficiency.
