England claimed the Women’s Euro 2025 title, defeating Spain 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty, as Spain missed three of their attempts, including one from Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati.
Spain took the lead in the first half through Mariona Caldentey’s header, but England fought back, with Alessia Russo heading in the equalizer just before the hour mark. The match went into extra time but remained level, setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout.
Despite Spain controlling much of the game, England’s defense held firm. In the shootout, Bonmati’s penalty was saved, and Kelly stepped up to seal the win for England, who are now back-to-back European champions.
Coach Sarina Wiegman’s tactical acumen was key, as she guided England to their second successive European title. This victory also helped England overcome the disappointment of losing the 2023 World Cup final.
