Crystal Palace clinched their first major trophy in 164 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, thanks to a first-half strike from Eberechi Eze.
Eze, who grew up in south London and was once released by Arsenal as a teenager, volleyed home the only goal of the match after 16 minutes. Despite Manchester City dominating possession and creating numerous chances, including a missed penalty, Palace held firm in the afternoon heat under the resolute leadership of goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
It marked a historic day for Palace, who had previously lost in FA Cup finals in 1990 and 2016. Eze’s winner followed his crucial goals in both the quarterfinal and semifinal, capping a standout tournament for the England international.
Manchester City, meanwhile, finished a disappointing campaign without a domestic trophy for the first time since 2017.
Their aggressive, attack-heavy lineup controlled large portions of the game, with Kevin De Bruyne orchestrating the play in what was likely his final appearance at Wembley in City colours. However, they failed to break through Palace’s defence.
City’s best chance came when a penalty was awarded in the first half. Star striker Erling Haaland stepped aside for Omar Marmoush to take the shot, but Henderson dived to his right and saved superbly—one of several key moments that kept Palace ahead.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner, appointed just over a year ago, overcame a rough start to the season to become the first Austrian coach to lift the FA Cup. His team’s transformation from early-season strugglers to cup champions has been dramatic.
“This is unbelievable. No one expected us to be here, let alone win it,” said Eze after the final whistle. “We’ve made history for this club, for the fans, and for south London.”
City’s defeat marked a second consecutive FA Cup final loss, adding to a season where they lost their Premier League crown and fell short in Europe.
