Iran vows retaliation after senior commanders killed as Israeli strikes hit Beirut
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply following a series of high-level assassinations and expanding military operations involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Iran has threatened a forceful response after one of its top security figures, Ali Larijani, was killed in an Israeli airstrike. The country’s military leadership described the attack as a major provocation and warned that retaliation would be both decisive and severe.
Tehran also confirmed the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, a senior commander of the Basij militia, marking one of the most significant losses among Iran’s leadership since the conflict intensified.
At the same time, Israel has widened its operations beyond Iran, targeting positions in Lebanon. Residents in central Beirut were urged to evacuate ahead of anticipated strikes aimed at Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.
One such strike reportedly hit the Bashoura district, underscoring the growing risk of the conflict spilling further into neighboring countries.
The broader confrontation has its roots in a dramatic escalation late last month, when joint US-Israeli operations reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
Since then, hostilities have intensified across multiple fronts, including missile strikes, targeted assassinations, and attacks on military infrastructure.
The United States has also carried out strikes along Iran’s southern coastline near the Strait of Hormuz, citing threats to international shipping from Iranian missile systems. Meanwhile, divisions have emerged among Western allies, with former US officials and NATO partners expressing concern over the direction and consequences of the conflict.
Fears of a wider crisis have been heightened by an incident at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, where a projectile reportedly landed near the facility.
Although Iranian authorities and international monitors say there was no damage or radiation leak, the event has drawn attention to the risks posed by military activity near nuclear infrastructure.
As the conflict deepens, humanitarian concerns are mounting. In Lebanon, hundreds have been killed and large numbers displaced amid ongoing Israeli strikes.
International organizations have raised alarms about potential violations of humanitarian law, while global markets and shipping routes remain on edge due to the instability in the region.
