The Kenyan government has issued a stern condemnation after President William Ruto was struck on the arm by a flying shoe during a public address in Kuria West on Sunday afternoon, an incident that has prompted widespread outrage and the arrest of three individuals.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, in a strongly worded statement posted to social media, described the act as “shameful” and a “direct affront to the dignity of the Presidency.” He called for swift action against those behind the disruption, warning that such behavior cannot be tolerated in a democratic society.
“We must respect the institution of the Presidency,” said Mwaura. “Those behind this shameful act must be apprehended and brought to justice. There can be no justification for assaulting the head of state.”
The incident occurred mid-speech while President Ruto was addressing residents on matters of development and national unity. According to local media, security briefly intervened as the president momentarily paused but continued his remarks without further incident. Video footage circulating online shows the shoe hitting the president’s left arm, prompting gasps from the crowd before order was quickly restored.
Authorities confirmed late Sunday that three suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the assault. Police in Migori County said investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would face charges related to public disorder and possible intent to harm.
While President Ruto has not commented directly on the incident, several political leaders from across the spectrum have condemned the act, urging political tolerance and civility in public discourse.
“This is not the Kenya we want,” said Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki. “Regardless of one’s political views, physical aggression against any leader — let alone the president — is unacceptable and undermines the rule of law.”
The attack comes amid rising political tensions and a series of opposition-led rallies critical of Ruto’s economic policies. However, analysts caution that acts of aggression during such events risk escalating political hostilities ahead of upcoming local elections.
Security around presidential functions is expected to be heightened following the breach, with the National Police Service saying additional measures will be put in place to safeguard public gatherings.
For now, the government has urged calm and warned against turning political platforms into theaters of confrontation. As spokesperson Mwaura emphasized, “Disagreement is allowed in democracy — violence is not.”
