Kenya transport strike turns deadly as fuel protests shut down major cities, several killed
A nationwide public transport strike in Kenya has continued into its second day, turning violent and leaving several people dead as protests over rising fuel prices spread across the country.
The industrial action has crippled movement in major urban centres, including Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, where commuters have been stranded and normal business activities largely halted.
The strike was triggered by a recent increase in fuel prices following global market pressures, with transport operators withdrawing services in protest.
The disruption quickly escalated into violent scenes in some areas, with reports of clashes and destruction of property.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said security agencies have arrested hundreds of people linked to the unrest, adding that some criminal elements had infiltrated the protests and were responsible for attacks on both public and private infrastructure.
Authorities have also begun clearing roadblocks erected during the strike as they work to restore order and ease movement across affected cities.
The crisis has deepened concerns over rising living costs, as residents continue to grapple with the impact of higher fuel prices and prolonged disruption to daily life.
