Elton John has shared the emotional impact of losing his eyesight following a severe eye infection last year. In a heartfelt interview, he revealed that he is now “unable to see” properly, with limited vision in only one eye.
“I can’t see the television,” he admitted, explaining that since July, he has been unable to watch his sons—Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12—play sports like rugby and soccer.
This loss has been especially challenging for John, who is deeply involved in his children’s lives and their activities. He described the experience as “distressing” and mentioned, “It’s been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”
Despite the difficulties, John remains positive about his situation.
“You get emotional, but you have to adjust because I’m lucky to have the life I have,” he shared. “I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of my left eye,” he added.
John’s vision struggles have also impacted his ability to record music, leaving him feeling “stuck.” However, he recently teamed up with Brandi Carlile on the song Who Believes in Angels?, collaborating with producer Andrew Watt and his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin.
Reflecting on his life and career, John noted how becoming a father has shifted his priorities.
“I used to say I wanted to die on stage,” he admitted, “but now, with kids, it’s different. Now I want my gravestone to read: ‘He was a great dad.’”
Though his eyesight challenges persist, John remains thankful for his life and his continued music career. At 78, he feels more inspired than ever, saying, “I’m riddled with music. It’s the greatest gift.” He remains hopeful, adding, “This is a tough one, but we’ll get through it. There’s still so much more to do.”
