Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop has reiterated that the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is irreversible, despite ongoing efforts by the bloc to reconcile with the three nations. Speaking on Saturday, Diop emphasized the commitment of the military leaders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to their newly formed confederation, established earlier this year.
Despite the firm stance on withdrawal, Diop noted that Mali remains open to cooperation with ECOWAS, indicating a willingness to engage with the regional bloc on certain issues. He also voiced opposition to the possible introduction of visas for nationals of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger traveling to ECOWAS countries, expressing concerns about the potential impact on the free movement of goods and people within the region.
The departure of these three countries from ECOWAS has raised significant concerns about regional integration and stability, particularly regarding trade and mobility. The confederation formed by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger marks a significant shift in West African geopolitics, with implications for economic and political relations across the region.
