A wave of sorrow swept through Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, following the sudden deaths of four siblings believed to have consumed a contaminated meal.
Their mother, who also reportedly ate from the same dish, is battling for survival at a nearby hospital. As reported by The Guardian Newspaper, the tragic event unfolded on Wednesday and has since drawn the attention of the Anambra State Police Command.
“No stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth behind this tragic occurrence,” stated the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, expressing condolences and vowing a full investigation.
The state police confirmed they were alerted by residents and immediately dispatched officers from the Ogidi Division to the home of the victims. The children were found lifeless, and their bodies were transferred to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that samples of the meal were secured and sent for laboratory analysis to determine the cause of the poisoning.
According to Ikenga, the mother’s condition remains critical, and medical personnel are working to stabilize her. He emphasized that her testimony, once she recovers, could provide essential details about what transpired.
The police have also begun questioning neighbors and others familiar with the family to build a clearer picture of the events leading to the tragedy.
The Anambra Police Command assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation. Commissioner Orutugu urged community members to support the inquiry by volunteering any relevant information, stressing that such cooperation is vital in getting to the bottom of the matter.
