Nicki Minaj Reveals Her First Name Has Igbo Roots

International rap star Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, widely known as Nicki Minaj, has confirmed that her first name has Igbo origins.

Minaj revealed that “Onika” is a Trinidadian variation of the Igbo name “Onyekachi.” She made the clarification while responding to a fan post praising her recent address at the United Nations, where she spoke against jihadist attacks on Christians in Nigeria.

The fan shared a breakdown of the name “Onika,” claiming it means “Who is greater than God” and suggesting that Minaj’s achievements, including speaking on global injustice, were destined from birth.

“The name Onika means ‘continued belief in a supreme being who holds ultimate authority and surpasses all others in greatness.’ Let my Nigerian Barbz confirm how God destines someone for great things before they are even born!”

Minaj responded with humour, adding another layer to the conversation about her identity.
“Will it get even more mysterious if I told you the tattoo on my arm means ‘God is with me’ in Chinese?” she wrote.

Her response has since sparked wide excitement among her Nigerian fans, especially those from the Igbo-speaking community, who have often speculated about the meaning and origin of her name.

Nicki Minaj has recently drawn significant attention in Nigeria after her appearance at the United Nations, where she spoke on the rising attacks on Christian communities in the country.

Her comments triggered debates, applause from supporters, and criticism from some Nigerian commentators.

The rapper, who has a strong Nigerian fan base known as the “Nigerian Barbz,” frequently interacts with her followers across social media.

Her revelation about her name adds to the growing cultural connections her fans believe she shares with Nigeria.

“Onyekachi” is a common Igbo name meaning “Who is greater than God?” or “No one is greater than God.” In many parts of the Caribbean, especially Trinidad and Tobago, African names were historically adapted into local variants, which appears to be the case with “Onika.”

Minaj’s recent engagement with Nigerian issues, combined with the revelation of her name’s African roots, has further endeared her to her growing Nigerian audience.
