The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged dominant in the Rivers State Local Government elections, winning 20 out of 23 chairmanship seats declared by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which currently controls the state government, managed to secure victory in only three LGAs—Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City (PHALGA), and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA).
Significantly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara lost his own LGA, Opobo-Nkoro, to the APC, a development analysts describe as a major political upset in the state’s grassroots politics.
RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, announced the official results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Breakdown of results as declared by RSIEC:
- Abua-Odual – APC (Ofori Owoalabi) – 28,755 votes

With this outcome, APC now controls the majority of Rivers’ LGAs, marking a dramatic political shift and tightening its grip at the grassroots. PDP, despite being the ruling party in the state, now retains influence in just three councils.
