The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR) has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to organize a 48-hour nationwide strike.
This is in response to a deadlock in minimum wage negotiations and a recent hike in electricity tariffs. CDWR demands a minimum wage of at least N200,000 and the reversal of various anti-poor policies.
They criticize labour leaders for suspending actions without concrete plans and attending international meetings instead. The CDWR points to successful protests in Kenya as an example for Nigerian workers and emphasizes the need for a political party to challenge the capitalist ruling elite.
