Concerns have arisen over Nigeria’s decision to sign the Samoa Agreement, a $150 billion deal confirmed by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, at an EU reception in Abuja on July 1.
Critics, including civil society organizations and religious groups, argue that the agreement includes clauses promoting LGBTQ rights. Bagudu’s media assistant, Bolaji Adebiyi, clarified that the signed documents focus solely on economic development, with no mention of LGBTQ issues.
The Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning addressed stakeholder concerns in March, emphasizing that the agreement aligns with Nigeria’s laws and promotes gender equality and reproductive health.
