Nma Achumba, a 56-year-old woman, has been remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Afara, Umuahia, following allegations of recruiting and abducting 21 young girls for sexual exploitation and child trafficking in various areas of Abia State in June 2023. Despite the accusations, she pleaded not guilty in court.The trial Magistrate, Ngozi Lekwa, cited specific legal sections related to trafficking and criminal activity but ruled that the Magistrate Court lacked jurisdiction to handle the case. Consequently, the case file has been transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution in the Abia State Ministry of Justice in Umuahia.
The matter is scheduled for a compliance report on November 7, 2023, and Nma Achumba remains in the Correctional Centre, Umuahia. The Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechuckwu Uwanna, expressed the state’s commitment to prosecuting individuals involved in such illegal activities and urged the public to refrain from engaging in illicit businesses. Reports of similar issues have been received from different areas in Abia State.
