In a scathing response to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation address on January 3, 2025, Ghana’s Minority caucus in Parliament condemned his administration as the “worst” in the history of the Fourth Republic. Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah, criticized the government for failing to address severe economic hardship, a mounting debt crisis, and growing youth unemployment.
He emphasized, “The people of Ghana have already given their verdict… economic hardship, huge debt, hopelessness, and more.” Armah-Buah also reminded the president of his unfulfilled promise to build a National Cathedral, calling it a “persistent timely reminder of how not to govern.”
It is clear that frustration is growing in Ghana as the economy and governance issues continue to affect everyday citizens. With the IMF’s ongoing support, many Ghanaians seem to feel trapped in a cycle of unfulfilled promises and economic stagnation. It is a tough time for the country, and it’ll be interesting to see how the leadership responds in the coming months.
