Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, has stirred up a storm of reactions after stating in a recent sermon that he does not believe Nigeria was created by God.
Addressing his congregation, Adefarasin argued that Nigeria’s existence was not the result of divine intervention but rather a colonial construct designed to serve the interests of the British Empire. He explained that the formation of the country was primarily motivated by economic benefits for the British, rather than any higher spiritual or national purpose.
“I don’t believe Nigeria was created by God. This country was made to serve British economic interests—so they wouldn’t have to carry the financial burden of less prosperous regions,” the pastor asserted.
Adefarasin also highlighted that the name “Nigeria” was not an indigenous term, but one chosen by the British, reportedly by the mistress of a British official, while Lord Lugard and other colonial leaders were finalizing the creation of the union.
He took issue with the popular notion that Nigeria’s independence leaders—Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, and Nnamdi Azikiwe—were the true founders of the nation. Instead, Adefarasin emphasized that the real creators of Nigeria were the British officials in Whitehall.
The pastor lamented the nation’s lack of economic progress, pointing out that Nigeria, in its current state, has failed to live up to its potential. He expressed that the country should have been a leading manufacturing center in Africa, but instead has become a place for dumping second-hand goods.
Adefarasin called for urgent reforms in the education system, specifically in technical and vocational training, to empower the population with skills for production and innovation. Drawing comparisons to China’s rise, he argued that Nigeria could achieve similar success if its leaders focused on justice, equity, and genuine nation-building.
“We should be the factory of Africa, but to get there, we need leaders who are committed to transforming this nation with fairness and integrity,” Adefarasin concluded.
