Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State called for a progressive political realignment and an ethical rebirth to rebuild Nigeria.

Soludo made the call at the Platform dialogue in Lagos to mark Democracy Day, June 12, 2025, during he keynote address titled – ‘Rebuilding Our Nation’.

He emphasised the need for unity, ideological clarity in politics and a value-driven citizenry.

He also underscored the complexity of Nigeria’s journey and urged a shift from rhetoric to actionable reform.

“There is the need for an ethical and value rebirth among Nigerians. We need to start advocating for a culture that rewards hard work and integrity over corruption and superstition.

“Two key areas for rebuilding the nation are ideological foundations for political parties and an ethical-value rebirth among citizens.

“The lack of clear ideologies in Nigeria’s political landscape is worrisome.

“The current state can be described as a ‘Nigerian Elite Plc’ driven by opportunism rather than principles.

“There is need for a return to ideologically driven parties, like we had in the second and third republics.

“I propose the formation of a new Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), uniting parties with progressive credentials to present a united front in the 2027 elections.

” This alliance will provide a clear alternative to the status quo and drive transformative policies,” he said.

Soludo commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s economic policies and global endorsements from institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

He challenged critics of the present administration to offer constructive alternatives.

He also urged citizens and leaders to rally around progressive ideals enshrined in the constitution by prioritising education, healthcare, rule of law and accountability.

Also speaking, Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim spoke on the vitality of education in national transformation.

Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, said there was the need for electoral reforms and strengthening of democratic institutions.

Mr Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Works and Housing, emphasized that the rule of law is essential for national development.
