South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, has urged the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and regional bloc IGAD to intervene over Uganda’s military presence in the country, warning that it could undermine the fragile 2018 peace agreement.
Machar accused Uganda of violating international agreements by deploying troops without the approval of South Sudan’s transitional government. Ugandan forces have also been accused of carrying out airstrikes in Upper Nile and Jonglei states, allegedly targeting civilians.
The Ugandan government has not publicly responded to the allegations. However, concerns are growing over the impact of foreign military involvement on South Sudan’s stability as the country prepares for elections later this year.
