Spain blocks US war flights, shuts airspace to Iran-bound operations
Spain has barred American military aircraft linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran from using its airspace, signaling a clear break from the US-led campaign in the Middle East.
Defence Minister Margarita Robles said Madrid has not granted permission for US forces to operate from bases on Spanish soil in relation to the conflict. She also made it clear that Spanish airspace will not be used for any missions connected to the war.
The move reflects the Spanish government’s firm stance against the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, as tensions continue to rise across the region.
Officials in Madrid are seeking to distance the country from the conflict entirely, including avoiding indirect involvement through logistical or strategic support.
Reports indicate the government is keen to ensure that neither its territory nor its infrastructure is drawn into the escalating crisis.
The decision comes amid growing instability following the launch of joint US-Israeli air operations against Iran in late February, a development that has triggered casualties and heightened global concerns over security and economic fallout.
