For today in history, the concept is that the past is a distinct and separate entity from the present, with its own unique customs, values, and ways of life. Ultimately, we are charged to approach the past with a sense of curiosity and understanding, recognizing that it is a fundamentally different place from our own.
A look at some historical events on this day.

On this day in 332 BC – Alexander the Great is crowned pharaoh of Egypt.

Still on this day in 1680, German astronomer Gottfried Kirch discovered the Great Comet of 1680, the first comet to be discovered by telescope.

According to verifiable research from Today in History, it was on this day in 1770 this James Bruce discovered what he believes to be the source of the Nile.

On this day in 1889, pioneering female journalist Nellie Bly (aka Elizabeth Cochrane) began a successful attempt to travel around the world in less than 80 days. She completed the trip in 72.

In 1922 on this day, the British Broadcasting Company began radio service in the United Kingdom.

Amazingly, on this day in 1960, Ruby Bridges became the first black child to attend an all-white elementary school in Louisiana.

According to Today in History, in 1967, American physicist Theodore Maiman is given a patent for his ruby laser systems, the world’s first laser.

Again, in 1991 on this day, American and British authorities announced indictments against two Libyan intelligence officials in connection with the downing of the Pan Am Flight 103.

Remarkably in 2003, obviously on this day, astronomers discovered Sedna, a distant trans-Neptunian dwarf planet.

It was on this day in 2008 that the first G-20 economic summit opened in Washington, D.C.
