TUNISIA: Kais Saied’s Reelection Victory Further Tightens His Control Over Tunisia

President Kais Saied has achieved a decisive victory in Tunisia’s presidential elections, securing 90.7% of the votes despite a low turnout of 28.8%. His main opponent, Ayachi Zammel, managed only 7.4% while imprisoned.

Saied’s first term has seen significant authoritarian measures, including the jailing of political rivals. Tarek Megerisi commented that Saied “will return to office weakened rather than strengthened by these elections,” reflecting a broader sense of disillusionment among voters.

Freelance filmmaker Amri Sofien expressed a bleak outlook, stating, “There is no hope in this country.” The election’s legitimacy is questioned as opposition parties boycotted the vote amid ongoing repression of dissent.
