As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, a powerful coalition is forming among top political figures aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly uneasy as opposition leaders and disgruntled APC members unite in what appears to be a serious political realignment.
Key figures involved include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-SGF Babachir Lawal. National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralphs Okey Nwosu, is also playing a major role in the coalition discussions.
There is growing speculation that Obi may run as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate in 2027, reviving their 2019 PDP ticket. Analysts believe this combination could be more potent together than their solo 2023 campaigns. One political observer noted: “If Obi had contested as Atiku’s running mate, they could have easily pulled over 13 million votes.”
In reaction, APC has started reinforcing its political base. A source within the party disclosed that “all first-time governors will be given automatic tickets,” a move designed to keep current governors loyal and attract defectors from opposition parties.
“For example,” the source explained, “Delta and Akwa Ibom governors would have lost re-election if they stayed with the opposition. They joined APC to protect their future, and the party welcomed them.”
Despite its potential strength, the coalition is already facing internal challenges, particularly over which party should serve as the platform. The ADC has reportedly amended its constitution to accommodate new, high-profile entrants like Atiku and Obi, but some longstanding members are resisting any takeover.
Further confusion was stirred when Peter Obi, in a recent video, insisted he would contest under the Labour Party. This was confirmed by LP’s spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, who said: “We are contesting the election on solo… there will be no automatic ticket for anybody.”
The Obidient Movement’s Yunusa Tanko also clarified that Obi hasn’t agreed to run as a vice-presidential candidate: “Peter Obi has not told anybody he’s going to be a VP. He is preparing to run for president.”
The battle lines for 2027 are already forming. While the opposition appears stronger together, unresolved tensions and conflicting ambitions may threaten their unity. Meanwhile, the APC is taking calculated steps to protect its turf and maintain power.
