Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has urged President Bola Tinubu not to seek re-election in 2027 if the country’s situation does not improve.
Adebayo, who contested the 2023 polls, made the remark on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday. He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of mismanaging Nigeria, saying citizens have endured worsening hardship under the current administration.
“If by 2027 things remain the same, President Tinubu should not be surprised if he is massively voted out,” Adebayo said. “Nigerians have suffered enough. His policies are not working. For his own good and for the good of the country, he should just go home and thank God for one term in office.”
He noted, however, that Tinubu could stand a chance in the next election if there are visible improvements in areas such as security, poverty reduction, job creation, and economic stability.
The APC recently endorsed Tinubu for a second term, a decision critics described as hasty and insensitive to the current realities Nigerians are facing.
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. Analysts argue that the party might have stood a better chance in 2023 had it done so earlier, instead of fielding Atiku Abubakar.
But Adebayo downplayed the PDP’s move, insisting that Nigerians are demanding alternatives beyond the two dominant parties.
“APC and PDP are like Siamese twins. They work together. Nigerians want a new direction and alternative politics,” he added.
The APC has continued to defend the administration’s economic reforms, urging Nigerians to be patient and trust that the policies will eventually yield results.
