Comrade Kennedy Iyere, the Edo State Governorship candidate of the Accord Party, has withdrawn from the race just 24 hours before the election. In his statement, Iyere explained, “My decision to step down is driven by a desire to contribute to solving the broader social and economic issues facing the country,” emphasizing his focus on Nigeria’s rising food insecurity and economic hardships.
He further clarified, “I no longer seek the governorship. My efforts are now directed towards helping the federal government tackle key national issues like unemployment and economic development.” Iyere faced internal party challenges, as his running mate, Bright Enabulele, falsely claimed to be the party’s candidate.
Despite this, Iyere called on Edo voters to support a candidate from the Edo Central Senatorial District, advocating for “a fair rotation of power after 24 years of waiting.” He reiterated that his shift in focus is “motivated by a selfless desire to help the country overcome its present social and economic challenges.”
