Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced Monday evening that his tenure as a Special Government Employee in the Trump administration has officially concluded, marking the end of his controversial role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In a post on X, the social media platform he owns, Musk thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to spearhead cost-cutting measures across the federal bureaucracy. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
Musk was appointed earlier this year to lead DOGE, a department Trump created to implement aggressive reductions in federal spending and staffing. Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE executed deep cuts across multiple agencies, drawing praise from fiscal conservatives and sharp criticism from labor unions and public service advocates.
However, tensions between Musk and the Trump administration reportedly escalated in recent weeks after Musk publicly raised concerns about Trump’s sweeping tax and spending cuts package. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk warned that the plan would “blow up the deficit” and undermine efforts made by DOGE to promote long-term financial discipline within the federal system.
“I don’t see how cutting revenue streams while simultaneously ramping up defense and infrastructure spending aligns with reducing the national deficit,” Musk said in the interview. “It risks undoing the very efficiencies we’ve fought to create.”
A White House official, speaking on background, confirmed that Musk began the official offboarding process Monday evening. “It’s mostly paperwork,” the official said, downplaying speculation of a rift. “His time in government was always intended to be short-term and project-based.”
Musk’s appointment to a government role, while retaining leadership of private companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and X, had raised ethical questions, with watchdog groups citing potential conflicts of interest. Still, Trump repeatedly praised Musk, calling him a “visionary patriot” capable of shaking up Washington’s bureaucracy.
In a now-viral image from February 11, 2025, Musk was photographed in the Oval Office alongside Trump and his young son X Æ A-Xii, symbolizing the billionaire’s unusual blending of tech, politics, and personal brand.
As Musk exits the federal stage, the future of DOGE remains uncertain. While the Trump administration has vowed to continue its mission, analysts question whether the department can maintain momentum without Musk’s high-profile leadership.
“Elon brought star power and disruptive energy,” said policy analyst Katrina Webb. “Without him, DOGE may become just another task force that fades into the bureaucracy.”
