Traditional rulers in Benue State, Nigeria, have issued a renewed 14-day ultimatum to nomadic herders and suspected armed groups, demanding their immediate departure from farmlands across the state. The directive follows growing alarm over persistent attacks on rural communities.
The announcement was jointly made by the Tor Tiv and Chairman of the Benue State Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty Prof. James Iorzua Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Chief John Elaigwu Odogbo. Speaking on behalf of the state’s traditional institutions, the leaders warned that failure to comply with the notice would result in serious consequences.
The new ultimatum was declared during a town hall meeting at the New Banquet Hall in the Government House, Makurdi. The event, held as part of activities marking Governor Hyacinth Alia’s second year in office, was organized by Solomon Iorpev, the governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communications.
Daily Post earlier reported that a previous notice had given herders until the end of May to vacate farming areas. However, continued attacks have led traditional leaders to extend the deadline by another two weeks, citing the worsening security situation in the state.
“In light of the ongoing killings and displacement of our people, we are compelled to take this firm position,” the traditional council said. “We cannot stand by while our communities are under siege. This is about protecting lives and livelihoods.”
The town hall was attended by key state officials, including Deputy Governor Sam Ode, who represented Governor Alia. Also present were the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Emmanuel Chenge, local government chairmen, commissioners, traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups, and representatives of youth, women, and labour organizations.
